A so called 'Jansunavni', Lies & Future of Pune Metro

'Jansunavni' held at Pune Municipal Corporation on 23rd June was a 'Big event', attended by many citizens, NGOs, DMRC officials, politians etc. As per all the Media, the next days newspapers claimed it to be huge sucess. Many political parties supported the Metro project & have given green signal to it based upon the poor quality DPR.
All this is a big 'Lie'. Many of us who attended the 'Jansunawni' know what happend. Many Citizes, PTC & other activists openly opposed the Metro project in its current form proposed. People were not given enough time to speak. The question & answers session was a big joke. Mr Sharma from DMRC was totally unaware of situations in Pune city & most of his answers were not satisfactory !
Still.............., our political parties passed our Metro project ! So even as things are claimed to be hunky dory, the Future of this huge project is in air. Maybe people who supported Pune Metro in its current form shall be in state of shock when the Project starts!
God help Pune Metro !!

Ar B.V Doshi, the Doyen of Indian Architecture on Pune Metro

Doyen of Indian Architecture , Ar B V Doshi visited PVP College of Architecture on 12th June 2010. Apart from aprreciating the effort taken by the Student's on Metro Project, Ar Doshi discussed the project at lenghts with the Students & Staff. Discouraging the way in which DMRC has laid metro on Jungli Maharaj road, Ar Doshi gave an idea of routing the Metro corridor along already existing River spine on Pune, which can also be integrated with the open spaces proposed along river front. The'River Metro' shall not interfere with the existing urban fabric of Pune & also give a very'Scenic View' along the route, he remarked. Now it is upon our able admistrators, the PMC & State Govt of Maharashtra to take such valuable advice coming from the Greatest Architect of India, in the right spirit or to go their own way & destroy the City of Pune.

'Nod for Metro' from PMC- Is there an action plan ?

It is said that , The mega 'Pune Metro' project of Rs 2281 crores will be given an easy' Nod' by the General Body of Pune Municipal Corporation on June 5 2010.
The question is ' Is there a blueprint or an action plan ready with the authorities to go forward with such a 'Huge' Project! Or is there one 'Big Confusion' ?

Elevated Metro Impact in Bangalore & same fate of Pune

Bangalore, one of the most beautiful cities & fast developing city in India is getting its Elevated Metro. Although seen as the latest symbol of development, ( much praised by BMRCL in their website & where private land aquisition is claimed to be just 12%) , the elevated metro in real life is impacting the urban fabric in a dangerous way.
The photos below are an example.....!

Do we want the same to Happen to our very own Pune ????

We are for Metro but our Resolution is

We are not against Metro project in Pune, as it is widely claimed by the PMC & Media. We as a part of the united group of Technical bodies of many professional organizations of Architects, Engineers, Planners, Urbandesigners, Landscape architects & Developers (called the PTC) have jointly studied the DMRC proposal & its lacunas & have submitted an endorsed 'Objection Resolution' to the Pune Municipal Corporation which is as follows:

Underground V/s Elevated Metro

Following is the comparison between Underground & Elevated Metro

While making a cost comparison of Underground and Elevated Metro, the following aspects need to be considered.

It should be appreciated that the DPR produced by DMRC does not give break up of the cost comparison of Elevated and Underground Metro. Other than mentioning that the Underground option is much costlier, there is no quantified justification of the cost difference. The same needs to be sought from DMRC.
As per the Information available with us, tender for Underground Metro has been accepted by Kolkata Metro recently for an amount of Rs.385 Cr /km.
Study made by IIT Mumbai for a Comparative Evaluation of Elevated and Underground Metro (copy of Which has been provided to you) clearly justifies that the Underground Metro actually works out Cheaper when all the aspects mentioned above are HONESTLY considered.
A misnomer is that Pune has Rock bed and hence underground construction will be costlier. In fact Pune has one of the best strata to build underground tunnels. Its a self sustaining strata hence No or Minimum lining is required hence there will be phenomenal saving in cost of lining the tunnels with concrete. It is green option and removed rocks crushed to metal can be used for construction as metal and stone dust. It will be further sustainable as ugly face mining and crushing of hills that is happening around will not be needed.
It is therefore a myth that Underground option is costlier if one looks at it holistically and rationally and this needs to be understood while accepting the DMRC claim.

Pune Metro Jagruti Abhiyaan -Signature Campaign & Public debate

Pune needs a good public transport system, hence we welcome any mode of public transport which would be people-friendly and of long term use for solving the serious traffic problems Pune is facing. However, there has to be transparency and wide public consultations before taking any decision in the matter.
Vanaz Ramwadi metro proposal The PMC city fathers have cleared the Rs.4,000 odd crore, 15 km Pune Metro corridor between Vanaz and Ramwadi (Phase-1). This is an elevated Metro, which passes through the centre of (not very wide) roads in Pune like Karve road, Jangli Mahraj road etc. This shall have a long term impact on the existing urban fabric of Pune.
Apart from disturbing the city traffic during the long term construction period, this proposal shall lead to cutting of the tree cover on JM road, land aquisition of certain prime properties in the city & demolition of some buildings to construct huge stations (as large as 35 m X 145 m,hanging over the road space) which shall occur at around 1km distance for the entire Metro corridor.
There are certain Basic issues raised regarding this by the Pune Technical Coalition Committee (formed by various professional bodies of Architects, Urban designers,Town planners & members of the Industry in the city) :
1. There is duplication between the Metro rail routes and other modes of transport such as BRTS, existing railway corridors and other networks. We must use all available transport resources optimally integrating Metro, BRTS, Railway, Bus, Cars, Autorickshaw, Cycles, and Pedestrians, to create a comprehensive network that covers most of the work and dormitory areas of Pune.
2. The choice of the elevated option rather than underground option seems short sighted and will destroy the quality of built environment and urban aesthetics and hence image of city of Pune. The Metro should be UNDERGROUND rather than elevated as proposed.
3. The proposal of granting a uniform 4 FSI alongside the Metro and BRTS to fund the proposal appears arbitrary. Alternative options of funding must be explored.

As an important step towards raising objections to this proposal, a mass signature campaigns & public debates are planned by Pune Metro Jagruit Abhiyan (PMJA). Mass Signature Campaign & public debates shall be held and an objection petition shall be endorsed by citizens of Pune & given to Pune Municipal Corporation .
The venue & dates are as follows:
